Robots existed a long time before today. Even though we think they were only born in the 20th century, the first were actually created hundreds of years ago, and were called – automatons. It was in the 1770’s that this amazing writing automaton was created. Shaped like a small boy, it is able to write programmable text in an elegant cursive script, using a goose quill. The attention to detail is truly extraordinary; this is truly one of the great works of mechanical computation. The automaton, along with Pierre Jaquet-Droz’s other works, are currently on display at the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire in Neuchâtel, Switzerland.
